Utah Star HS Player Loses Starting Job at Cal

Everybody can name the biggest busts in NFL history. The list usually starts with Ryan Leaf, then goes to JaMarcus Russell. How about Lawrence Phillips? More recently, we’ve got Trey Lance and Zach Wilson — although we pray he turns it around in Miami! It’s fun to mock NFL busts because they sign for millions after the draft, wear gold chains, drive Bentleys, and then flop once they get to the league.
College football busts have always felt a little sadder to me. You’ve got a kid doing a live commitment on ESPN2 with Kevin Negandhi, three hats on the table, and his parents by his side. Everyone’s excited. He picks USC or Ohio State. Bright future. And then a couple years later, he’s transferring to UTEP.
That’s what happened to Malachi Nelson. He left USC, went to Boise State, couldn’t beat out a kid from American Fork, and now he’s at UTEP in El Paso. A five-star player!
Today we can add a new one to the list — and it’s sad. Five-star Corner Canyon quarterback Devin Brown went to Ohio State, sat behind Kyle McCord and Mack Howard, and then transferred to one of the most disappointing football programs he could find: Cal Berkeley. And just today it was announced he lost the job to a true freshman who practically fell out of a tree.
Come on down to Utah State, Devin! Backup the pig farmer.
