We always get lists that show the most popular names in Utah for this year, let's go back a few years and check it out.

In 1995, the most popular name in Utah for a boy was Austin.

For a girl it was Jessica.

Let's do 1985...

Michael and Jessica.

What's with Jessica? Dominated for two decades?

It seems like we're going back to pioneer times with these names most recently. Although I guess you could say David and Michael in the 60's-80's are Bible names so they went way far back. But I guess so is Jacob.

Utah gets made fun of a lot for wacky made up names but all the names in the top 100 are all pretty standard, except maybe Axel which rang in at #65 in 2023.

Naming somebody is a big job and I feel like it's too much responsibility for a lot of parents. I feel like they should outsource it to a committee of relatives or the PTA.

Kindergarten teachers see all the horrific names that are produced each new year. Maybe they should be the ones to name all of the kids. Just have your kid exist for a couple years without a name and then when it gets sent to Kindergarten the teacher gets to name it.

Although if we did that we'd have names like Gabby, Swampy, Bad Breath, Zip it Chubby, Colin.
