The BLM manages much of the public land in Utah and the west. There lands cover everything from sprawling deserts, to canyons and cliffs, and expansive mountain ranges. The Artist in Residence program seeks to bring this beauty to the public.

Unleashing Creativity in Wild Landscapes

Skilled artists can take in the essence of a rugged range where wild horses roam and translated into a painting, a written story, or even a musical piece. The BLM offers a program where people with these talents can live for a time in these wild areas.

These opportunities are listed at the BLM website and it includes locations not only in Utah, but from Alaska to Arizona and Colorado to Nevada. The Artist in Residence program is managed locally by each BLM field office with the help of non-profit groups.

A Unique Experience for Talented Artists

Artists can submit their desire to be a part of the program, and if selected, will spend anywhere from a week to 8 weeks where they are provided a place to live and develop their artistic works.

They then offer a public presentation where they describe the works they have created. In exchange for the opportunity, they provide a work of art for the BLM office to use for educational purposes. However, the artist retains all rights to the work.
