With a changing world that seems to be moving faster every minute, having some extra food on hand seems like a good idea. Here is the canned food that will last the longest time in your pantry and won’t break your bank account to acquire.

Low Acid is the Key to Longer Long Shelf Life

Foods with higher acid content like fruits and tomatoes, and things that are pickled only last a year or so. On the other hand, things like canned meat and fish, vegetables, and beans will last up to five years.

Soups and stews do well, and they offer a mix of nutrients and proteins. It is still a good idea to stock things like canned tomatoes as they can be added to a meal and make it taste better. Just rotate through it more often.

Buy Now to Avoid Price Increases

Another good reason to stock up on things like tuna fish and mixed nuts is the changing tariffs. Many of the items that are canned are shipped in from other countries and the increased shipping costs will be passed on to the U.S. consumer.

It might also be a good idea to buy before late summer when America sees more hurricanes and other natural disasters. These can affect the availability even if you don’t live in the area.

One last thing is the by sell date. These are printed on cans, so you know when the food starts to lose its flavor. It can still be used past the date. Now if a can is bulging it should be tossed out immediately.
