# Flu Season May Be Arriving Early in Northern Utah — Here’s How to Prepare

Don’t Let the Flu Catch You Off Guard

When traveling to northern Utah you may want to add one more thing to your fall to-do lists: getting ready for flu season. National health reports suggest influenza activity is beginning to rise earlier than usual, making October a smart time to think about prevention. Utah’s latest respiratory disease dashboard, however, reported low flu activity statewide as of Oct. 7. In other words, it’s time to prepare, not panic.

Your Best Defense: The Flu Shot

Health experts recommend annual flu vaccination for most people ages 6 months and older. Protection takes about two weeks to develop, so getting vaccinated now can help before influenza spreads more widely. Several options are available, including standard shots, enhanced vaccines for adults 65 and older, and a nasal spray for eligible people who prefer to skip the needle.

This season also brings a new mRNA-based flu vaccine for adults 50 and older, although availability may vary by location. Check with your pharmacy or healthcare provider to find the best option for you.

Small Habits, Big Protection

Vaccination isn’t the only way to keep the sniffles at bay. Wash your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you’re sick. Antiviral medications can help when started early so that might be an option to consider.

Protect Your Household

Young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people, and those with certain chronic health conditions face greater risks from influenza. Getting vaccinated and taking everyday precautions can help protect vulnerable neighbors, too.

Northern Utah’s flu season hasn’t taken off yet, but waiting until everyone around you is coughing isn’t the best strategy. A little preparation now could mean fewer sick days later — and a happier, healthier winter tomorrow.
