Open Source Network Let’s You Communicate in Utah Off the Grid
Everything is connected and listening in our modern world. How would you like to communicate on a network that is outside the internet, cell phones, and satellites? The Meshtastic Network is weird option that does just.
Is There Really a Need for a New Communication Channel?
You may wonder why we need another way to communicate digitally when we already have so many ways already. There are cell phones, satellite phones, walkie talkies, and everything the military uses.
Despite this, there are people who want to get off the grid with their communications and they have created a way to pass packets of information at 915 megahertz. Using small radios they communicate long range that doesn't require a license or certificate.
Building a Local User Based Communication Solution
This is a grassroots network set up by hobbyists that originally wanted a way to communicate where there wasn't service. It is open sourced and people have set up repeaters that have created a network they call the mesh.
This network is fairly well built out in Utah, especially in Northern Utah where repeaters have been established in the mountains. This network extends into other populated areas in the state.
Communicate Freely: The Meshtastic Experience
You can communicate over Meshtastic like a text message. The benefit is that it doesn't go through any established network or service. It is relayed through the open source network that is not controlled by a government or any company.
How do you get on the mesh network? You can purchase a device online for as little at $35 bucks. This will connect to your phone via Bluetooth. Then you can communicate to other Meshtastic users all over the world.
