Wasp Woes At Southern Utah Pools Prompt Creative Pest Solutions
A home pool can be great on a hot Southern Utah day but when wasps come in for a drink, things get scary. This year there are multiple wasps flying in every minute to take a drink in my backyard pool. It is going to be a bad year.
The Challenge of Wasp Infestations in Southern Utah
The quickest way to solve the problem is find the nest where the wasps are coming from and remove it. I live near an industrial area, so this is harder to do than just checking mine and my neighbor's eves.
Wasps and hornets don't like the smell of peppermint, clove, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. Placing these plants or their oils around the pool area can deter wasps from visiting.
Innovative Solutions: Creative Methods to Keep Wasps Away
One guy says he got some laundry bags and filled them with moth balls and hung them near the pool and the wasps and hornets stayed clear. However, laundry bags may not be the first thing you want to see in your outside oasis.
I'm going to try one family's solution the next time my grandkids come for a visit. They got a bubble machine that they ran while the kids were swimming. The soapy bubbles bothered the wasps and made the surface of the water slippery.

As a bonus, it will entertain the kids and make the pool all the more fun. This year may be a bad wasp and hornet year, but it is about to become a good year for bubbles. Here's hoping it works.
