Crews Target Hotspots Near Birch Lake As Cottonwood Fire Spreads
Firefighters continue to make progress on the Cottonwood Fire burning in the Fishlake National Forest near Beaver, with containment increasing to 23 percent as crews work to strengthen firelines and protect nearby communities.
The fire, which began June 22 and remains under investigation, is estimated at 93,918 acres. A total of 1,222 personnel are assigned to the incident.
Efforts Concentrate Around Birch Lake
On Thursday, firefighters conducted direct suppression efforts near Birch Lake and within the Beaver Watershed. A specialized timber task force carried out snagging operations around LeBaron to remove hazardous dead trees and ladder fuels that could contribute to future flare-ups. Unmanned Aerial Systems were also used to identify hotspots in the Skyview area, allowing ground crews to target remaining pockets of heat.
Firefighters spent Thursday night preparing Forest Service Road 471 and protecting power poles ahead of the advancing fire. Spot fires were discovered in several timber stringers, and crews are continuing direct suppression efforts while removing standing dead trees that pose safety hazards. Hand crews are also working to secure handline from Ten Mile north toward Little Park, while helicopters continue to support ground operations. Fire managers said the fire is approaching a dozer line near Cork Ridge, where crews may use strategic firing operations if necessary to keep flames from crossing containment lines.
Residents are encouraged to attend a community meeting this evening, where Great Basin Team 5 and local agency representatives will provide an update on fire activity, current operations and answer questions from the public. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Beaver High School, 195 East Center Street in Beaver. A live stream will also be available on the Fishlake National Forest Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.

Officials warn that hot, dry weather and critically low fuel moistures continue to create conditions favorable for rapid fire growth. Smoke may produce unhealthy air quality at times in Beaver, Marysvale and surrounding communities. State Highway 153 remains closed in both directions, and Fishlake National Forest closures and evacuation notices remain in effect. Gov. Spencer Cox's emergency order temporarily suspending most fireworks use through July 5 also remains in effect as Utah faces historic wildfire conditions.
