Fire activity on the France Canyon Fire moderated today, giving firefighters a critical opportunity to make progress. Favorable weather conditions allowed crews to complete successful firing operations along the eastern perimeter, bringing the fire to 5% containment. The fire has now burned 7,650 acres, and personnel on scene have increased to 519.

Firing operations, also known as backburns, involve intentionally setting controlled fires to eliminate unburned vegetation between the fire front and containment lines. These strategic burns help slow or stop the wildfire’s forward progress by creating defensible space. Crews along the southern flank continued to strengthen lines to protect the nearby Bryce Woodlands community, with a complement of engines staged for structural protection in case the fire shifts south.

Firefighters on the northern perimeter, supported by bulldozers, made progress cutting direct lines. Western crews continued to assess access options in steep, rugged terrain. Air resources, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, provided bucket drops and reconnaissance throughout the day.

Despite the progress, concerns remain as a Red Flag Warning takes effect today through Saturday. Conditions include gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity dropping to 9%, raising the risk of rapid fire spread.

Smoke will likely continue to affect Bryce Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon City, Tropic, and surrounding areas. Fire managers praised today’s efforts and remain focused on strengthening containment lines ahead of deteriorating weather.

The wildfire has grown to about 800 acres. Aerial firefighting resources, including helicopters and Super Scoopers, are drawing water from Lake Powell to aid in suppression efforts. Glen Canyon rangers are assisting with vessel support during these operations.

Boaters are urged to stay near the south wall of the canyon and avoid Oak Bay when traveling between Dangling Rope and Rainbow Bridge. Recreation in the main channel should be limited to transit only, and boaters should monitor marine radio channel 16.
