France Canyon Fire Grows to 4,704 Acres Near Hatch, Utah
The France Canyon Fire, sparked by lightning, continues to burn in rugged, inaccessible terrain approximately 6.5 miles southeast of Hatch, Utah. As of the latest report, the fire has consumed 4,704 acres and remains at 0% containment.
The fire is burning through dry, receptive fuels and steep terrain, making ground operations challenging. However, crews have made progress reaching and reinforcing several parts of the fire. Efforts are currently focused on securing the southern flank to prevent spread toward nearby communities, especially the Bryce Woodlands area, which remains on alert.
Hot Shot Crews Are On The Scene
Five Type 1 Hotshot crews and a Type 2 Initial Attack crew are working alongside six engines, two helitack crews, four Type 2 hand crews, and five helicopters. Fixed-wing aircraft, including Single Engine Air Tankers and large air tankers, are also available for support. In total, 180 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, with more crews expected to arrive in the coming days. The helicopter base at Bryce Canyon Airport continues to provide critical logistical support.
Planned operations include reinforcing containment lines along the southwest flank near Bryce Woodlands and establishing an anchor point on the southeast perimeter. On the west side, efforts are underway to hold the fire from crossing East Fork Road, which could threaten Bryce Canyon City and the national park.

Winds are expected to shift today from the southwest to the northwest, potentially increasing fire behavior on the southern and eastern flanks. While today's fire weather conditions will be less intense due to a passing cold front, gusts up to 25 mph and low humidity will continue to challenge suppression efforts.

Smoke from the fire is expected to impact Bryce Canyon National Park and Ruby’s Inn. Fire activity on the Paunsaugunt Plateau may also contribute to regional smoke and fire spread.
Due to safety concerns, significant closures are in place. All National Forest System lands south of Utah State Route 12 on the Powell Ranger District are closed, with exceptions for designated trails and campgrounds in Red Canyon. The closure order is in effect until July 31, 2025, unless lifted sooner.
