I'm not a big fan of things coming to an end, even though that's what life is all about. Changes and moving on. I really don't like the end of the holiday season. New Year's Day is particularly hard for me because it was the holiday where it was generally just my family together, no travel to other family that day, and I miss that now. And when New Year's Day was over it also meant back to school the next day.

I wanted the party to keep going.

Now, I'm not one to head to the bars for a night of drinking and socializing, that's not in my wheel house. But in an odd way, I can see people who do go out to enjoy time with others and socialization have to see that party come to end on a nightly basis.

As the night winds down and the clock edges closer to closing time, a familiar phrase rings out in bars across the country: "Last call!" This announcement signals the final opportunity for patrons to order drinks before the establishment ceases alcohol service for the night. But what exactly goes into this ritual, and why is it important?

The concept of "last call" has been around for as long as bars have existed. Traditionally, it serves two primary purposes: ensuring patrons have a final chance to order drinks and allowing the bar staff to prepare for closing. This call often marks the beginning of the wind-down process, where bartenders can finish serving while starting to clean and close up for the night.

I was always under the assumption that “last call” was uniform through out the country, and enforced by federal regulation (remember they once tried to ban all alcohol sales). Turns out that is not the case at all. This article from Toast shows all the different last call times around the country.

I can guess you're thinking that Utah has the earliest last call time in the country, but you know what? We don't. Our 1:00am last call is earlier than many states, but it is Florida and Mississippi that mandate last call at midnight. One weird thing about Florida is that in Miami and other large cities, last call doesn't come until 5:00am.

And Florida isn't the only state that has variable last call times. Most of New York state has a 2:00am last call time, but in New York City, the booze can flow until 4:00am. Same thing with Illinois and Chicago.

And for those of you who can't deal with the 1:00am last call here in Utah, you don't have to go to far. Our neighbor Nevada along with Louisiana have no last call time.

Last call has become a cultural touchstone in the nightlife scene. It signifies the end of an evening's social experience, often prompting a final burst of energy on the dance floor or a heartfelt conversation at the bar. For many, it's a reminder to enjoy the moment and make the most of their night out.

I can understand if some get a little melancholy when they are out and they hear last call. It means the party's over.
