Streaming television continues to reshape how Americans watch entertainment in 2026, and Utah viewers appear to be following the national trend toward on-demand programming and away from traditional cable and broadcast television.

Utah’s streaming habits remain closely aligned with nationwide viewing patterns that favor major Netflix releases, nostalgic series and family-friendly programming. In a recent nationwide streaming analysis, Utah’s most searched streaming show was Stranger Things, reflecting the state’s continued interest in mainstream science fiction and adventure programming. That popularity appears to have carried into 2026 as the final season of the series helped drive record streaming numbers across the United States.

Other programs dominating streaming platforms nationally this year include Virgin River, One Piece, Seinfeld and Bluey. Analysts say Utah viewers often mirror broader American viewing trends while also favoring family-oriented content and accessible drama series.

Almost Half Of All Viewing Is Now Via Streaming

The bigger story, however, may be how dramatically viewing habits have changed overall. According to Nielsen data released in early 2026, streaming now accounts for nearly half of all television viewing in the United States. In December 2025, streaming reached a record 47.5 percent of total TV viewing, far surpassing broadcast television at 21.4 percent and cable at 20.2 percent.

Industry analysts say the shift has accelerated rapidly over the past several years. In late 2021, streaming represented only about 28 percent of total television consumption. By the end of 2025, that figure had climbed to nearly 48 percent while cable viewing continued a steep decline.

The rise of streaming is being driven by several factors, including lower costs, flexible viewing schedules and exclusive programming. A recent industry report found the average American now spends roughly $30 per month on streaming services compared to an average cable bill of about $147 monthly.

Sports remain one of the few areas where traditional television still draws massive audiences, particularly NFL broadcasts. Even so, streaming companies are increasingly moving into live sports coverage, including exclusive football games and major event programming.

For Utah households, the shift reflects a broader national reality. Television is no longer tied to fixed schedules or cable packages. Instead, viewers increasingly choose what they want to watch, when they want to watch it, with streaming now firmly established as the dominant force in home entertainment.
