Utah, This is Too Much
Shower Thought - October 6, 2025
Not to get political on your heiny, but one of the most common political arguments is about guns. Two people arguing. One of them says this is America, the Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms. The other person says, well, when James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights on parchment paper with a quill, he didn’t know about modern automatic weapons—he was thinking about muskets. And then they yell at each other for a while, and then Thanksgiving’s over, and you watch the Cowboys lose.
When Abner Doubleday created baseball and put the mound at 60 feet, 6 inches, he wasn’t envisioning a day when Mason Miller would be throwing 104.5 miles per hour. The MLB league batting average this year is .246 because pitchers are throwing too hard. One hundred years ago, the league average was .292.
Here’s another thing the founding fathers of sports may not have foreseen: these damn kickers. When Walter Camp or whoever invented football made the field 100 yards, he didn’t think one day some Latvian Orthodox kicker would be able to put it down the middle from 66 yards. In 2024 there were 20 field goals made from 60 yards or more. This year, there will be more.
Aaron Rodgers was made a hero in Week One for an amazing last-minute, game-winning drive. The Steelers were down one point with a couple of minutes left. Rodgers had two short completions on the drive, and Chris Boswell kicked a 60-yard field goal for the win. Last night’s Patriots-Bills game had five field goals, including the game-winner from 52 yards by Andy Borregales. Field goal kickers are too good and too important to the game. And they should be banned.
