Shower Thought - September 22, 2025

I went to see a comedian a few weeks ago in Vegas, and he talked about the perfect comedy rooms. He wants a low ceiling, dark lighting, and a crowd that is loose but not too drunk, because then he has hecklers.

He likes little theaters over clubs, because in clubs you have waiters coming out, people looking at menus, and shouting their orders while he is trying to tell jokes.

Huge arenas and stadiums are bad for comedy because they are too big. Everything is delayed, it is hard to gauge the audience.

Are they laughing, are they talking? It is just way too big. Comedy needs to be more intimate, like a small room in New York with 50 people, everyone paying attention. That is the perfect size.

The perfect size game for Utah football is at 9 p.m. MT on FS1, with Petros Papadakis on the call, and about 50,000 people watching on TV.

Big Noon, College GameDay, the Rose Bowl, those are too big of stages for the Utes.

They got smacked by Texas Tech 34 to 10 after all the buildup, with Dave Portnoy, Gus Johnson, and Joel Klatt throwing out his Death Taxes and Utah Football line.

A couple of years ago against Oregon, College GameDay was there, Whittingham rode out on his Harley, and Steve Smith was on the panel picking games.

They lost to Oregon 35 to 6. The last Rose Bowl, the granddaddy of them all, millions watching. Penn State 35, Utah 21.

Utah performs best in front of smaller audiences. National games just lead to heartache.
