10 years ago The Game Awards were born.

Building off of what he had done for Spike television, Geoff Keighley produced and hosted a brand new iteration of the show in the year of 2014.

The show did as the title implies and awarded certain games of all makes and styles awards based on popularity, performance and so on.

It was also a hotspot for brand new video game announcements, showing premieres of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Meta Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to name a few.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Dragon Age: Inquisition beat out Bayonetta 2, Dark Souls II, and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to claim the first ever Game of the Year award from Keighley’s show.

The broadcast hit right around 2 million and ever since it’s been a yearly tradition.

From God of War to Elden Ring, the right to join the ranks as the 11th ever Game of the Year Award is up for grabs for six nominees.

Those include Astro Bot, Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Listen, I wont pretend to know any of these games, nor do I care who wins.

The Game Awards will give out awards for a variety of things like Best Virtual Reality game, best mobile game, best sports game, best multiplayer, best narrative and so on.

And I don’t care about those either.

Let me let you in on a little secret.

Out of everyone who tunes in to the show, which is a lot of people, right around 118 million watchers in 2023, very few are actually there to see if Super Mario Party Jamboree wins “Best Family Game” of the year.

Everyone is there for the anticipation of a new game announcement.

Is that long awaited sequel going to release a trailer? Is that sought after reboot about to be revealed?

Who knows, but as the roughly 3-4 hour show rolls on, there is at least hope that a particular type of game you are waiting for could be revealed.

Even games that have been announced can be expanded upon, meaning the game announcement you got a small teaser for a year ago may have an actual full blown trailer during the show.

No surprise is certain, but they are certainly teased.

The volume and scale of how cool the announcements are up to the viewer and personal taste, but there will be new games and their world premiere’s on display regardless.

The stream start’s December 12th at 5:30 Utah time and can be found on YouTube, Twitch and Facebook for starters.

Or you can just wait for the full set of announcements to come out after the fact, which is easy and saves time and ultimate disappointment when the game your hoping for still has yet to exist.

Maybe one day they’ll make Red Dead Redemption 3.
