What exactly does Utah import from Canada?

I assumed it was probably some ginger ale and a couple of hockey players to fill out the roster of our new NHL team.

It turns out it's a bunch of other stuff.

Here's some stats from connect2canada.com: (LINK TO FULL SITE)

Utah imports $3.1 billion dollars in goods from Canada annually.

Agriculture 24%

Minerals and Metals 14%

Equipment and Machinery 13%

Forest Products 8%

Chemicals 6%

Energy 4%

Transportation 4%

"Trade with Canada supports 80,300 Utah jobs in addition to the 3,950 employees at Canadian-owned businesses across the state. In addition, Utah exports $2.3 billion in goods and services to Canada. Canadian-owned companies, including Enbridge, Ovivo, and Osisko Development, are major contributors to Utah’s economy, employing residents in every sector of the economy, paying taxes locally and contributing to the local economy through these salary dollars."

Utah spends $415 million on live animals every year from Canada.

From

  • $412M in live bovine animals
  • $43M in baked goods
  • $28M in fresh or chilled beef
  • $27M in prepared or preserved meat
  • $21M in fresh or chilled mushrooms

That's a lot of beef.

I didn't realize how much livestock we had to get from Canada. It seems to me that Utah has a bunch of cattle and I assumed that it was all bred here, but I guess it needs to be supplemented with Canadian bulls.

There's nothing better than a cattle ranch. The smell, the bulls, the hay. I love going onto a ranch or even a feed lot and just looking those bastards in the eye and smelling what they have to offer. Makes you feel alive!
