Utah, Are You Tired of SEC Lectures?
Shower Thought - August 11, 2025
Audio Transcript
Dave Chappelle used to be one of my favorite comedians. Chappelle’s Show was the best thing on TV in the early 2000s. It was like Key & Peele before Key & Peele. They did the “Race Draft,” where Chappelle played Tiger Woods and different races drafted mixed-race celebrities. There was the “Black White Supremacist” sketch about a blind man who did not know he was Black, and the Rick James bits were everywhere. Chappelle was great.
Now, all Dave Chappelle seems to do is walk on stage with a chair, sit in the chair, and lecture the audience about society and politics. He is not really a comedian anymore. He is a philosopher. And honestly, it is not as good. You end up getting a three-hour lecture.
That is exactly how I felt watching Any Given Saturday on Netflix this weekend. It was a lecture. It is about SEC football behind the scenes. Brian Kelly, Shane Beamer, the poor guy from Florida, Clark Lea at Vanderbilt. It is SEC football, “Any Given Saturday,” and “It is a religion,” all the stuff we have been hearing for two decades. That schtick worked for about 20 years, but it is not hitting anymore.
The SEC lost to Notre Dame last year in the semifinal. They lost to Michigan the year before that. Their best team is not even an SEC team. It is a Big 12 team. Saban is gone, Urban Meyer is gone, Les Miles is gone. It is not as good anymore. But they are still lecturing us about “It just means more,” “Any given Saturday,” “The Swamp,” “Tiger Stadium,” and “Sit down, let me teach you the philosophy of football.”
No thank you. Go to Hell.
