BYU-Colorado’s Alamo Bowl Game Breaks Multiple Records
BYU and Colorado facing off in the Alamodome was always one of the more anticipated bowl games of college football’s postseason.
It had the successful teams, both ranked in the AP Top 25.
It had the big names, such as a Heisman winner and a likely top 5 NFL draft pick, all being led by one of the most recognizable coaches in the game.
It had the brand recognition between one of the most discussed teams of the past few seasons and a squad that views the world as their campus with fans in every state.
BYU would channel that hype and emerge victorious with an impressive 36-14 win powered by stellar defense, a powerful ground game and electric special teams moments.
But when the dust settled, was all the hype legitimate?
Did the game live up to the billing?
Well wonder no more, as the official details are out in regards to the contest and it’s impact thanks to the official social media account of the Valero Alamo Bowl.
First of all, the TV numbers.
Bowl games are made for football fans of all fandom types and allegiances.
You may have a favorite team, but bowl season isn't like an NFL Sunday where you have to be locked into your team while a multitude of other games unravel at the same time.
Bowl games are normally isolated events, unique to their time slot, meaning if you have a hankering for football, there’s few options.
This means BYU, Colorado and all sorts of football fans in between were locked into the action evident by the 8 million viewers.
Per the post, that was the most viewed Alamo Bowl in the 32 seasons of hosting the event.
It was the most viewed game in the last five years of college football postseason action that WAS NOT a college football playoff game.
Outside of trend setting TV numbers, the attendance was as good as it could get.
With 64,261 seats filled it was the 12th sellout for the Valero Alamo Bowl.
Even more importantly it was the most attended bowl game that was not a part of the playoff scene.
The 57 million dollar economic impact was cited as the “top estimated impact since 2007” per the report.
Nearly 18 years have passed since they’ve seen that type of event influence.
The game also contributed to $1.245 million in local scholarships, the largest in Alamo Bowl history and the best among all bowl games.
The last stat they lay out is the combined team payout in which the Valero Alamo Bowl dished out $9.5 million between both BYU and Colorado, once again the largest in it’s history.
Considering TV viewership to payout, from a high touted match up to a full house, this game delivered in a multitude of ways, proving that bowl games outside of the playoffs are still worth the effort.
And for BYU fans, this game will rank #1 in a couple of categories as well for years to come.
