College football is being robbed of offseason montage moments. Every sports movie has a montage moment where Rocky is training in the Snow in Russia. The Titans left side strong side. Herb Brooks shouting AGAIN! in Mirace. In college football, now when the team's bad, the montage isn't them running through tires, and lifting...it's them going into the portal and buying better players. The montage is a transaction scene in a hotel lobby that involves a big black duffle bag.

That's why I'm impressed with BYU's defensive front this year. No new portal additions. Same guys they had last year. They didn't hire an edge rusher from Auburn. They must have had a montage scene in the offseason. Guys getting better, working harder, tires to run through, lifting, John Williams music going in the background, slow motion, inspiring. Poppinga coaching em up, Kalani, Jay Hill. BYU had 11 sacks all of last year...they already have 5 this year. They're on pace for 30. That would put them near the top of the BIG 12 after being at the bottom last year. This could be a huge success story in developing guys from one season to another. Batty, Bagnah, Glasker, Nelson. Sometimes developing the guys you got is better than hiring somebody new. It's been impressive.

Tecmo bowl was one of my favorite games growing up because I was always the bears or the raiders. Bo or Walter. But the brilliant thing about Tecmo bowl was there were only 4 plays and the defense could try and guess which play you were gonna run and if they guessed right, you had problems. It was like a chess match for dumbos. Smart players would run when the other team thought they were gonna pass and vice versa. Just like the great former TCU coach Dutch Meyer who made Sammy Baugh a passing legend. roll out pass on first down what?? That's right Sammy. Wing it!

That's the joy of watching the 49ers. Brock Purdy never has to catch a ball drop back and look at 7 defenders in coverage with their shoulders square. Kyle Shanahan is constantly rolling him out off of play action on first and second downs. Purdy's throwing to wide open receivers running against the grain of the defense and it's why he was the top passer in the league last year in play action passes. He wasn't nearly as good on straight drop backs. Shanahan cuts the defense in half, uses their momentum against them, and passes when they think he's running, it's old school tecmo bowl play calling. If only they had Bo Jackson.

Did you grow up with a car guys as your dad? I didn't but when I was in college my landlord was a car guy. And one Saturday I was telling him I needed to go get an oil change at Juffy Lube. 20 bucks 20 minutes then I'd be back to watch football for the rest of the day. The car said nonsense! Bring your car over to my house we'll change the oil ourselves. We won't give jiffy lube the satisfaction! 6 hours later..I was back home having missed all the games I wanted to watch.

Car guys are like defensive coordinators. They never want to outsource their job to anyone else. Look at Antonio Pierce the new head coach of the Raiders. he's a defensive guy. Played defense, became a defensive coach, and now as the head coach wants to win with defense. He's not going to outsource the job of winning a game to the offense. The defense can do it! So on 4th and 1 with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter, down 6, and in Chargers Territory...he tells the offense to Punt! The defense will do the job. We'll take care of this game. Let's punt pin em deep and play D. Well the Chargers marched down methodically and scored a touchdown. Raiders never got another shot to win the game. Defensive minded coaches always want to do it themselves...but sometimes it's better to just outsource it to Minschew.
