Former Utah Ute Now A Super Bowl Champion
Britain Covey was a name well worth watching during his time in Salt Lake City accounting for more than 2,300 total yards and 11 touchdowns as a wide receiver for the Utah Utes.
In 5 seasons and 47 total games played, the former Timpview star delighted fans with fantastic speed and incredible elusiveness.
Covey contributed in a variety of ways for the U, catching, running, passing (2 touchdowns thrown in 2018) and returning the football as a special teams ace.
In those 5 years, Covey accounted for 5 touchdown returns, 4 via punt and 1 via kickoff.
On 92 punt returns Covey would average just near 12 yards per try and 25.4 yards on 33 kickoff returns on his way to 1,930 yards combined as a returner.
He had the burst, he had the drive, he had what many would call the “it” factor to elevate his game to the next level, the only issue was, he just wasn’t very big.
When people think NFL players, 5-8, 173 pounds likely doesn’t come to mind.
Covey had to fight to overcome all odds, and like Trindon Holliday or Darren Sproles before him, he found a way to secure a spot with an NFL team, in Covey’s case, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Covey made the squad as an undrafted free agent in 2022, and has been with Philadelphia ever since, being listed as the shortest player and the roster and the second lightest player, only 6 pounds heavier than Kicker Jake Elliot.
Never one for excuses, Covey has found way’s to not only be on the team, but to make an impact on it.
With a total of 11 receptions on 14 targets with 76 yards, Covey hasn’t been asked to shine through as a receiver during his stay in the city of brotherly love.
His duties and largest impact on the team lies primarily as the punt returner.
In three seasons, Covey has fielded 68 punts for 771 yards, good for a 11.3 yards per return, just about 1.5 yard more than the NFL average this year.
In 2023, Covey had 29 punt returns and was good for almost 15 total yards per return, which was the best in the NFL per pro football reference.
This year has been much more challenging as injuries have only allowed for 5 total appearances for the former Ute standout.
Only given six chances to turn up field, Covey had totals of 46 yards and an average of 7.7 yards per try.
Although the injuries have been frustrating for the Eagles special teams ace, making it all the more frustrating is the fact alone that the Eagles found themselves in the Super Bowl for the 2nd time in Covey’s short NFL career.
Despite being designated to return back in late January, Covey’s nagging injuries kept him out of the action and ultimately out of the Eagles 40-22 Super Bowl LIX victory in New Orleans over Kansas City.
Not suiting up due to injury had to be disheartening, but Covey handled it well.
With his team’s triumph, Britain Covey becomes a Super Bowl Champion as a member of the 2024-2025 Philadelphia Eagles.
As the Eagles will look to defend that title as NFL’s best this upcoming season, both Ute and Eagles fans hope to see the punt returning specialist back out there with full health on his side to start the new football year.
