‘Utah’s Grand Canyon’…Largest Mine in World is in Utah
The biggest man made excavation site in the world is Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Copper Mine.
The mine goes almost a mile deep and is 2.5 miles wide.
They take out over 400,000 tons everyday.
It's located in the Oquirrh Mountains southwest of SLC.
You've all seen it probably, but I didn't know it was the biggest in the world.
It's basically our Grand Canyon.
When I think of huge excavation mines I think Africa or maybe Pakistan. In the movies, it's always some far off place. Leo DiCaprio is trying to find some important gem, or trying to stop global warming, or trying to get on a cabinet door in the ocean...
Whatever it is it's always compelling.
According to the Guinness World Records: (LINK TO FULL ARTICLE)
"Since it began operations in 1906, more than 5.4 billion tonnes of rock have been excavated from it. It measures 4 km (2.5 miles) across and 1.2 km (0.75 miles) deep. It has been nicknamed 'the richest hole on Earth'. It is located near Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The mine is visible from space. As of 2004 more than 15.4 million tonnes of copper have been produced from the mine."
Copper is used for a million things including electrical wiring, electronics, motors and generators and those cooking pans that don't stick that the Shamwow guy hocks on TV?
Have you ever tried those? I think they work pretty good. We have the knock-offs. But there's not a lot of stick on them. Pretty good.
Let me know your favorite man-made mine domestic or otherwise!
