If it feels like the college football season just ended, it’s because, well it did, just about 15 days ago.

But that doesn’t mean that we aren’t already desperately anticipating what could come to be almost 7 months from now.

It doesn’t help the agonizing hiatus that official schedules are starting to release, allowing fans to familiarize themselves with who’s coming to town as they circle the “must-watch” games on the calendar.

The Big 12, home to both Utah and BYU football, just revealed their schedule yesterday morning sending fan’s and media personalities into a schedule frenzy of what’s good and bad for the upcoming season.

Initial takeaways of note for both Cougar and Ute fans are as follows:

Why in the world is the Holy War being played on the 18th of October? (Seriously after last year’s miss of not playing this game on rivalry week, how did they not remedy this?)

BYU has a nice week three bye before they have their only two consecutive road games of the year at ECU and Colorado.

Utah does not play consecutive road games this season.

Both teams have a two week homestand with Utah hosting Colorado and Cincinnati in late October-Early November in the middle of Big 12 play and BYU starts the year off with two non-conference games in Provo VS Portland State and Stanford.

Common opponents shared between Utah and BYU are Colorado, Cincinnati, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

BYU’s conference schedule has replaced Kansas State, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Arizona State and Houston from last season (4-2) with Colorado, West Virginia, Iowa State, Texas Tech, TCU and Cincinnati.

Of course the Cougars ended up playing and besting Colorado in the Alamo Bowl, but this will be their first meeting since 1981 for a regular season game, and their first game that counts towards standing in the Big 12.

Utah swapped out last year foe’s in Oklahoma State, Arizona, TCU, Houston, UCF and Iowa State (2-4) for Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Kansas.

Yes, Utah did play Baylor last year, but it was a game scheduled well before the collapse of the Pac-12, leaving it scheduled as a non-conference tilt, meaning the showdown in Waco on the 15th of November will be their first conference game together in the Big 12.

Reoccurring opponents come in the form of Arizona State and Colorado for Utah, two teams who toppled the Utes last season.

BYU will square off once again with UCF and Arizona, both of whom BYU took down by double digits last year.

And of course they have each other on October 18th.

In preseason play, BYU will look to snap a two game skid (2017,2022) against East Carolina in Greenville.

The Stanford game will be the 4th meeting between the Cougars and Cardinal with BYU winning in 2022 and Stanford holding strong back in 2003 and 2004.

Utah will reunite will former conference foes UCLA (Pac-12) and Wyoming (Mountain West).

Utah has played UCLA a recorded 21 total times and has won 4 of their last 5 meetings, the last win coming in 2023, the final year of the old Pac-12.

As for Wyoming, the history is thicker with a total of 84 meetings between the border opponents.

Yet unlike UCLA, the elapsed time between meetings is greater with the last matchup between the Utes and Cowboys coming back in 2010, a Utah win in Laramie for a game with Mountain West implications.

The Utes will look for their 5th consecutive win over Wyoming on September 13th.

Both Utah and BYU will play an out of state FCS opponent with BYU hosting Portland State in Week 1 and Utah welcoming Cal-Poly in week two.

This being BYU’s third year in the Big 12,they have had a chance to properly introduce themselves to everyone at least once by now, but for Utah, new, first ever, brand new conference games are on tap including:

Texas Tech, first meeting since 1973

West Virginia, first meeting since 2017.

Cincinnati, first meeting ever.

Kansas State, first meeting ever.

Kansas, first meeting since 1996.

With so many new first time experiences, people will be eager to see how Utah reacts to a slate of old friends and brand new rivals.

It will certainly help that the Utes will not have to leave Utah in the entire month of October in which Utah will host ASU, travel to Provo, and then do battle with Colorado and Cincinnati in consecutive weeks at Rice-Eccles spanning from October 4th (Bye week) to November 1st (VS Cincinnati).

There you are, about all the fun facts I can pull up for you on this one.

Hopefully it’s just enough of a tease to get you excited about this upcoming season before the inevitable drag of the off season sets in a month from now.

Good luck with that!
