What Does Utah Think of Moms Going to Work?

The kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, Harrison Butker, has stirred up controversy for what he said at a Catholic University during a commencement speech. He talked about a few different topics that upset some on the internet, but it was his comments about his wife and stay at home moms that ignited a debate.

He praised his wife for choosing to be a homemaker and went on to say it was one of the most important titles of all. At one time the people of Utah would have agreed with these comments. Is it still the same today or would most disagree?

More Utah Moms Working

Statistics for 2023 show more moms in Utah choosing to work out of the home, though it didn’t factor in part-time work. When it comes to full time homemakers, Utah is not high on the list. The states where there are the most stay at home moms are all in the south with Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia at the top.

The decision to work out of the home has a lot to do with economic factors and the cost of living has increased in Utah as well as the rest of the nation. The beehive state is 1% higher than the national average for cost of living and housing is 4% higher.

2024 Survey says More Choosing to Stay Home

Harrison Butker did get a lot of applause and standing ovation at the end of his speech. This was at a conservative catholic college, but it also may indicate changing views. A survey from last year shows 26% of moms are staying home compared to 9% in 2022.
