BYU’s Richie Saunders Scores Career High Against ASU
Shower Thought - January 8, 2026
When Kevin Durant went to the Warriors in 2016, Steph Curry got demoted to the second banana. Curry was the MVP of the league the year before. Durant comes in the next year and Curry doesn't get to have as much fun anymore. His shots go down, his points go down, his FG% goes down by 4 points, his 3 point make total for the season goes down by 80 in the same amount of games played, of course they have a great year and win the championship easily, but Curry's year individually wasn't as fun because Durant was the top dog. It's just how it goes when you add the best player in the league to your team.
That's what I thought was going to happen to Richie Saunders this year. Last year he was the surprise star of BYU. Flippin around, making big shots, flying into the lane, hair floppin, got BYU to a 6 seed in the tournament and he was all big 12 and got to be the man. Then they add AJ Dybansta this year, who has arguably been the best player in the country so far, but somehow Richie's season has been just as fun this year. He just went for a career high 31 points against Arizona State, he's scoring more this year, he's shooting more times a game than last year, he's making more threes, more trips to the free throw line more assists. Adding AJ hasn't put Richie in the shadows, it's somehow done the opposite.
