Three Utah Basketball Programs Sit In Top Twenty of This Stat
With the college basketball season underway a good chunk of teams at least have 4 or more games under their belt at this point in time.
Although likely too early in the season to make major assumptions of who’s good and who isn't based on a couple of “mostly” lopsided match ups, we are far enough into the year to assemble pieces of a season long puzzle.
For the three big schools right here in the beehive state, the beginning of the season has provided nothing but hope and optimism as BYU. Utah State and Utah have combined to win 11 of 12 games played. (The University of Utah has the one blemish here falling to Mississippi State 78-73)
Not only are these teams winning but they are doing so quite handily.
Take for example, Utah, in their three wins over Alcorn State, Central Arkansas and Queens NC has an average margin of victory 35.7.
BYU in their wins over Central Arkansas, UC Riverside, Queens NC and Idaho are packing an average win margin of 28 points a night.
Utah State has picked up right where they left off with a beyond impressive 40 point drubbing on the nightly in wins over Alcorn State, Charlotte, Westminster and Montana.
The pure dominance on display is unlikely to sustain as the season ramps up alongside the difficulty, especially as BYU and USU hit the road for the first time.
Only Utah has played a game away from home to this point, the narrow loss to the Bulldogs of Mississippi State, on a “technically” neutral floor.
If the dominance can travel is to be seen, but fans hope the offensive productivity can be consistent.
All three schools currently sit in the top twenty of “Points Per Game” in the nation for D1 men’s hoops.
Utah and BYU are separated by .2 points with the Cougars clocking in at 15th on 92 points a night and the Utes landing 17th on 91.8 points with SMU sandwiched between.
Utah has hit the 100 point mark once this year VS Alcorn and scored 95 or more in every win thus far.
BYU put up 90 or more twice VS Queens and Idaho.
The Mississippi State game has a lot to do with Utah trailing BYU oh so slightly in the averages.
For the Aggies, the 100 point barrier has been the standard with 3 of their 4 games seeing the home team eclipse it.
Utah State put up a whopping 117 against the Griffins, helping add to what is the current best PPG total in the entire scene at 104 points a night.
Utah State and Portland State (102.7 on 3 games) are the only two teams to currently average more than 100 points a night.
This is a massive accomplishment even this early on in the season, and one that makes Utah State the benchmark when it comes to scoring the ball.
Things are guaranteed to shift as the season unfurls, but for now basketball fans in the state of Utah can find excitement and joy in knowing that throughout most of Northern Utah, high flying, electric, powerful offensive basketball can be found under the Wasatch and right through Sardine Canyon.
