BYU Backer Becomes Highest Paid In NFL… Again
Fred Warner is making headlines… again, and for all the right reasons.
Warner, one of the NFL’s best linebackers, just got a contract extension to match his on field contributions.
If I had a nickel for every time Fred Warner was signed to a contract extension making him the highest paid linebacker” id have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot, but it’s still worth noting that it’s happened twice.
Here was the news back in 2021, for example:
Of course, the way the money works in today’s world means that if your the highest paid in the NFL currently, you are likely also the highest paid player at that position in the history of the NFL, and that is the case for Fred.
Warner, a member of the BYU Cougars from 2014-2017, tallied 264 total tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 7 interceptions in Provo, good for two defensive touchdowns.
Drafted by San Francisco in 2018 with the 70th selection, Warner has only ever known the 49ers.
His resume makes it easy to see why he is such a major contributor to some of the most dangerous defenses in pro football.
It isn’t just the statistics that make Warner a name worth watching every Sunday, but rather his mentality, work ethic and strength that are admirable.
This previous season, a down one for the Niners, saw Warner play at a very high clip despite having every reason in the book to shut things down early.
He pressed on regardless, put his shoulder to the wheel and got rewarded handsomely for his efforts.
San Francisco has been in hot pursuit of locking down their franchise cornerstones the last couple of weeks.
They pinned down quarterback Brock Purdy for 5 years on $265 million.
Tight end George Kittle re-upped for another 4 years at $76.4 million.
And the latest, Fred Warner, as mentioned above, has now been shown by the organization how valuable he is to them.
Warner will look to lead the 49er’s back to the competitiveness they displayed two seasons ago, a showing good enough for a Super Bowl appearance.
