Would Tiny Nuclear Reactors In Utah Be More Safe?
Utah is looking seriously at building nuclear power plants. This conjures up worries for most of us who have pictured nuclear disasters of the past. But what if the reactor were small? What if it was a micro? This is what is being proposed.
What Is an SMR or Small Modular Reactor?
These are much smaller than traditional nuclear power plants and therefore generate less electricity. They can be factory assembled as a module and shipped to the desired location. And the reactor part means it uses nuclear fission to create power.
Because of these options, it is safer and not as expensive to build. For this reason, Utah and other western states are looking at building SMR’s to increase electrical power capacity.
Lehi and Eagle Mountain held a public meeting that was covered by Fox 13 on the subject. They discussed with residents how even in a worst-case scenario any radiation could be contained within the facility. The possibilities are interesting.
Micro Modular Nuclear Reactor is Even Smaller
This video describes an even smaller reactor that could provide electricity as a backup for a business or community. They claim the reaction contained in silicon carbon that can handle intense heat.
Because of this way of containing the uranium, the reactor does not need any outside safety measures in case of a disaster. If this is true, these micro reactors could be a game changer.

Whatever the solution is, expect nuclear power to make its way to Utah in the near future. The governor has made it a priority and options are being weighed.
