As Memorial Day weekend approaches, signaling the unofficial start of the summer boating season, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) gears up for patrols aimed at curbing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). These patrols, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday across various waterbodies in Utah, signify the agency's commitment to preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems.

Led by DWR conservation officers, the patrols aim to ensure boaters comply with existing AIS laws. Lt. Bruce Johnson emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating, "Our goal is to educate the public and prevent wildlife violations from occurring in the first place." The threat posed by quagga mussels, particularly their potential spread from Lake Powell to other waterbodies, underscores the critical need for vigilance.

Recent legislative updates in 2023 introduced administrative changes to boating fees in Utah. Boat owners are now required to separately pay their boat registration fee through the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles and the AIS fee online, resulting in two distinct proof-of-registration stickers. Additionally, all watercraft operators, including paddle boards and kayaks, must complete an annual mussel-aware boater course.

Motorized boat owners must also pay the annual AIS program vessel enrollment fee, which ranges from $20 for residents to $25 for nonresidents. Compliance entails displaying proof of payment, either digitally or through a printed receipt. Furthermore, strict protocols govern watercraft leaving Lake Powell, the sole Utah waterbody with confirmed quagga mussels, requiring exit inspections and, if necessary, professional decontamination.

Utah boasts over 40 inspection stations strategically positioned at boat launch ramps and along highways. Additionally, five dip tanks facilitate swift and efficient decontamination of boats with complex systems. However, it's important to note that staffing issues may affect operational hours, as evidenced by the closure of the dip tank at Bullfrog Marina during Memorial Day weekend.
