In my understanding, what made the Russian hockey team so intimidating back in 1980 was that they were all 6 foot 6, grown men, who never spoke. If the disney movie miracle is to be trusted, it was 20 players all named Vladislav, Boris and Sergei, who wore no accessories, who never changed expression, who believed in the power of the proletariat. And for decades they had made Beef Stroganoff out of the mamby pamby Americans who had big personalities and attitude! The Soviets were silent killers and that's what made them so scary. Like Drago.
Last night, watching Arizona walk into the Marriott center reminded me of these russian hockey teams. Everyone was 6'9. Stoic. Ivan Kharchenov didn't say a word all game. Motiejus Krivas didn't blink his eyese for 40 minutes. Jaden Bradley and Brayden Burries didn't emote once after hitting any of their 17 made shots. Koa Peat play with ball, he shoots the ball. BYU did an amazing job fighting back from a 19 point deficit, but Arizona looks to be an unfeeling, basketball machine. No shame in losing to them.

When I was a kid we would do college football jersey tournaments. Who has the best uniforms. We'd draw up a bracket and go through round by round. And it was notre dame vs. iowa ND, UCLA vs Kansas State, Ucla, and one that I always loved but could never vote for was Syracuse. Donovan McNabb, in that awesome Navy with the plain orange helmet, great unique combo, Marvin Harrison in that beautiful orange, when he shot that guy at the carwash, so Dwight Freeney. It's a classy uniform. BUT they played in a dome. So when you pictured Syracuse, it was in a dome on astro turf and that just ruined them. Notre Dame and Michigan were out in the slop, mud and grass. They always went further in the tournament. Football should be muddy and cold and have grass stains.
That's why I'm against all these people yesterday complaining about the AFC championship game being played in snow. They say these super important games should be played in doors! We want to see the best athletes playing at their peek we don't want snow and mud and slop to get in the way. And I say then go watch the NBA go watch jai alai. I love the slop I love the ice bowl. I love Tom Brady getting hit in the back in the snow and fumbling, I love Leon Lett! give me the elements. All these teams play in domes now on turf, celebrate the teams like the Broncos who play the game like old Fuzzy Walter Camp envisioned it.
