Intermountain Health Cedar City Hospital marked a major milestone Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community open house celebrating the completion of its newly expanded emergency department and molecular imaging services center. The project is designed to improve access to care for residents across southern Utah while also supporting the region’s steady growth and influx of visitors.

The hospital’s emergency department, a Level IV Trauma Center, has undergone a 4,500-square-foot expansion costing $7 million. The upgrade adds nine new treatment rooms, bringing the total to 22, including three rooms dedicated to patients with behavioral health needs. Hospital leaders say the expansion will help meet increasing demand from local communities as well as the millions of tourists who visit nearby national parks and recreation areas each year.

“Our emergency department expansion and the remodel of our Molecular Imaging suite, including the addition of advanced PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine technologies, reinforce our commitment to exceptional, patient-centered care,” said Jamison Robinett, president of Intermountain Cedar City Hospital, in a press release. “These investments allow us to provide faster, more accurate diagnostics and a more seamless experience for every patient who walks through our doors.”

First Hospital Expansion Since 2006

The need for expanded services has been evident. In 2025, the hospital recorded more than 21,000 emergency department visits and completed over 57,000 imaging procedures. Robinett noted that the project represents the hospital’s first major expansion since 2006 and reflects a commitment to ensuring patients can receive care close to home.

Emergency department manager Jake Fausett said that the additional rooms are already making a difference. “The expansion also gives our caregivers much needed resources to be able to treat our patients in a faster manner,” he said. “We have been able to utilize several of the new emergency rooms since January. Since then, we have reduced our average patient length of stay by over 16 percent so far. That improves overall flow, efficiency, and patient experience.”

In addition to emergency services, the hospital has expanded its imaging capabilities with the addition of a new PET/CT scanner and nuclear medicine camera. These upgrades are expected to improve access and scheduling while providing a more comfortable experience for patients undergoing oncology and cardiac scans.
