What is a “SILVER ALERT” in Utah??
There are those who say: "put your phone on silent, I'm trying to do the crossword.
And then there are those who say: "I need to hear if Janice calls."
And then you have others who don't care about Janice being caught up with the wrong crowd in Wendover and they don't care for word games they just want to take a gummy and zonk out to Pluto TV.
I stand somewhere in the middle.
I never answer my phone and I never have my phone make a sound or vibration. I hate my phone and want to be left alone.
But there are a few things that are helpful to know just in case you might be able to help out a fellow citizen.
There's something called a Silver Alert that's like an Amber Alert except for elderly people.
From the website: (LINK TO WEBPAGE)
- Defines "endangered adult" as a person 60 years of age or older, or a person with dementia.
- Requires the Department of Public Safety to develop an alert system similar to the Amber Alert System for endangered adults.
- Requires that the system utilize highway signage in the geographical area where the person went missing.
- Allows the department to make rules to set requirements for alerts.
The idea is to help seniors who may suffer from dementia who are out on their own after escaping from a care center for example.
From ABC4:
"To activate a Silver Alert, the police officer responding to a missing-person call must decide if the missing person qualifies as an “endangered adult.” Dougherty explains that under the law, this is “a person who is 60 years or older, or a person under 60 who has some form of dementia.” Dougherty adds, “A person who doesn’t have the capability to take care of themselves.”
I'm glad to know about this I had no idea. Godspeed.
