Shower Thought - June 25, 2025

Audio Transcript

Today's June 25th.

On June 25th 1998, Mark McGwire had already hit 35 home runs! Well on his way to break Roger Maris 61 home run record, and everybody was watching.

When the Cubs played the Cardinals on September 7th, ESPN got a 9.5 Nielsen rating which was about 20 million people which is more than game 7 of the NBA Finals just got.

Bud Selig had his home run chase that helped save the MLB after the '94 strike. Having a historic chase is big.

That's why the NBA flourished from about 2005 to 2019. It upped its per year TV revenue from $700 million a year in the early 2000's to $2.5 billion a year now. The NBA had a chase going!
Michael Jordan won 6 championships in the 90s. He's the greatest ever. Six years after Jordan retires, here comes a new guy, the chosen one, who's gonna chase him for 20 years.
The MLB has a home run chase in 98 that lasted one season. The NBA has had LeBron chasing Jordan's for 20 years!
It was a ratings bonanza for the NBA, for ESPN and Fox that debated it every morning. Who's the GOAT??
But the chase has ended. And the NBA's ratings have been falling since COVID. They're in desperate need of another chaser. It's not Anthony Edwards, it's not Luka, and I don't think it's SGA.
Will the new Jordan chaser be drafted #1 tonight?
Listen to The Andy Thompson Show on ESPN 97.7 weekdays from 4-6 p.m.
