Utah, the NFL Needs to Fix This NOW!
Shower Thought - September 29, 2025
Last night I was watching Sunday Night Football with my dad and we were talking about the new kickoff rule. They made the big change last year, it looked goofy, and they tweaked it this year to penalize touchbacks to the 40 yard line. Boom, you have every kickoff being returned this year. Great. Cutting edge. The NFL is the smartest league in sports. Everyone else tries to mimic everything they do. It is America’s new pastime.
And then the game ended in a tie. My mom could not believe it. What? How is this possible? They are leaving! This league we had been praising for how quickly they updated the kickoff rule is having a tie. All of these fans in their cheesehead hats and cowboy makeup are leaving the stadium after spending $500 a ticket, leaving like a bunch of European soccer fans. This is the one big blemish on the head of the NFL. For all of the ways college football is trying to be the NFL, the NFL can take one thing from college, and that is how to do overtime!

In the movie Steve Jobs, the good one with Michael Fassbender not the bad one with Ashton Kutcher, they do a great job with the scene where Jobs gets fired from Apple. It is very dramatic. He is betrayed by his mentor and by all of his closest allies and gets fired from the company he started.
This has happened a few times in sports. Bill Belichick, who invented the Patriots dynasty, got run out. Terry Francona, who should still be coaching the Red Sox, got fired in 2011 after breaking the curse of the Bambino. Now you can add Mike Gundy to that list. Not only did Mike Gundy in a way invent modern Oklahoma State football, he stayed over and over again when he could have left. Les Miles left in about ten seconds when he got better offers. He went to LSU. Jimmy Johnson left in ten seconds when he got an offer to leave Stillwater and take his talents to South Beach. Mike Gundy stayed. He won eleven games in 2010 and could have left, he won twelve games in 2011 and could have left. But he never did. He played there and was a Cowboy all the way. He had seven seasons with ten or more wins. He imbued the whole program with personality and spirit. He railed against Oklahoma when they left the conference. He even won ten games two years ago. Gundy deserved better. Oklahoma State can go to hell.
