Shower Thought - September 4, 2025

In college football, you could argue that the new era brings more excitement than ever before because there are quarterbacks galore. Any given year, you can upgrade your quarterback position and give your fan base new hope. Utah has upgraded to Devon Dampier. BYU went from Slovis to Retzlaff, and maybe Bachmeier, who transferred from Stanford, will be an upgrade from Retzlaff. Utah State has…the pig farmer. It’s rare for a team that finishes a season not bowl-eligible to come back with the same quarterback the next year. New hope! The transfer portal may be lame, but it at least gives fans justified optimism from one season to the next, especially at the quarterback position.

The NFL is the complete opposite. A new season kicks off tonight! Everybody thinks their team is going to be better. Raiders fans think Geno Smith can take them to the playoffs. Steelers fans are excited about Rodgers. Justin Fields is going to do something with the Jets. Russell Wilson and the Giants… There are 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL, but only 14 playoff spots. If your team didn’t make the playoffs last year and you got a new quarterback this year, he’s probably not a playoff quarterback, he’s either a warmed-over mid level guy or a rookie who only knows how to throw RPOs. Good quarterbacks don’t change teams in the NFL like they do in college. We’re screwed. Just like we were last year.

The Divisional Round last year featured Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Stroud, Hurts, Daniels, Goff, and Stafford. Do you have someone better than those guys? Team doesn’t matter! Only the quarterback. We’re all screwed.
